JOHN1 STANLEY, HARTFORD FOUNDER (ROBERTA) was baptized 02 Oct 1598 in Tenterden, Kent, England, and died bef. 03 Mar 1634/35 at sea on the way to New England. He married ELIZABETH UREDGE 14 Oct 1623 in Benenden, Kent, England. She was born abt. 1602 in England, and died abt. 12 Dec 1632 in Tenterden, Kent, England (buried).

Although his name appears on the Founders Monument in Hartford and in “The Original Proprietors”, John Stanley was never in Hartford, having died at sea on the way to New England in 1634. His brother, Hartford Founder Timothy Stanley, took in John’s daughter Ruth, and his other brother Hartford Founder Thomas Stanley took in John’s son John.

Recommended genealogy: “The Stanley Families of America as Descended from John, Timothy, and Thomas Stanley of Hartford, CT”, Israel P. Warren, Thurston & Co., Portland, Maine, 1887 (Although dated and lacking in source citation, most of the data presented for the first generations is substantiated by “The Great Migration: Immigration to New England 1634-1635”, Vol VI, R-S, Robert Charles Anderson, NEHGS, Boston, 2009. As is usual in genealogies from this period, this is primarily a patrilineal genealogy.)
